How do you invite children to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

State clearly on the invitation whether children are welcome, and name any children who are invited by name. This avoids confusion for parents and the couple.

The clearest way is to write the names of the children you are inviting on their own envelope or on the card. If the day is adults only, say so politely. Phrases like 'adults only reception' or 'we kindly request no children' are common and understood.

Decide this before you send invitations. Once the wording is printed, changing it is harder and can cause upset. Think about the practical side too. A long ceremony, evening dancing and late food may not suit young children. Some couples offer a play area, a babysitter or a separate kids' menu to help.

If you are unsure, ask the parents. They may know their child is not ready for a long event, or they may be happy to arrange childcare. Do not expect parents to cover the cost of a sitter unless you have agreed that in advance.

Be consistent across your lists. If you invite some families' children but not others, explain why. It is okay to invite your nieces and nephews but not distant cousins, as long as the reason is clear and fair.
