How do you address wedding invitations to a family with kids?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Put the parents' names on the outer envelope and list the children's first names on the inner envelope. If you are not using an inner envelope, write the children's names on the outer envelope below the parents' names.

When inviting a family with children, the outer envelope is usually addressed to the parents only, for example Mr and Mrs David Brown. The inner envelope is where you can name the children, using their first names, for example David, Sarah, and children, Tom and Lily. If you are sending a single envelope, write the parents' names on the first line and then the children's first names on the next line. This makes it clear that the invitation is for the whole family. If you are only inviting the parents and not the children, make that clear by writing their names only on the envelope and not mentioning the children. It is also kind to let the parents know separately, perhaps with a note, that the invitation is for adults only. For older children who are over 18, it is usual to send them their own invitation, addressed to them personally, even if they live at home. This respects their status as adults.
