Short answer
Address the outer envelope to the adults by name, for example Mr James Smith and Ms Sarah Jones, then list each child by name on a separate inner envelope or on the invitation itself.
When a family includes a stepchild, the kindest approach is to name every person who is invited. On the outer envelope, write the adults' names, using their preferred titles and surnames. If the adults share a surname, you might write Mr James Smith and Ms Sarah Smith. If they have different surnames, list both names clearly. Then, on the inner envelope or on the invitation itself, write each child's first name on a separate line, for example James, Sarah, and Lily. This makes it clear that the stepchild is fully included and welcome.
If you are not sure about family names or titles, ask a close friend or relative. Avoid assuming that the stepchild shares a surname with either adult. You can also use a family style such as The Smith-Jones Family on the outer envelope, but naming everyone individually is more personal and avoids confusion.
For the reply card, leave space for each guest to respond by name, so you know exactly who is coming. If the stepchild lives with the family only part of the time, still include them by name if you are inviting them, and let the parents know they are welcome to bring the child on their usual days. Kindness and clarity matter most, so when in doubt, write names in full and check with the family beforehand.
