How do you address wedding invitations to a family with no inner envelope?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

On the outer envelope, write the parents' names on the first line and the children's names on the second line, or simply write "The [Surname] Family" if you prefer a less formal style.

Without an inner envelope, the outer envelope does all the work, so you need to be clear about who is invited. If you are inviting the whole family, write the parents' names on the first line, for example "Mr James Smith and Mrs Sarah Smith", then list the children's names on the next line, in age order. If the children are older, you might give them their own invitation, but for younger ones, including them on the family envelope is fine. If you want a simpler approach, "The Smith Family" is acceptable for a casual wedding, but it does not tell guests exactly who is invited. For a formal wedding, naming everyone is clearer and avoids confusion. If you have a partner or child with a different surname, include their full name too. Always double-check spellings and titles, as mistakes on the outer envelope are hard to correct once posted.
