How do you address a married couple on a wedding invitation?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

Address a married couple by writing both names on the outer envelope, usually with the senior or first-named person first and 'and' between the names.

The traditional style puts the host or senior name first, followed by 'and', then the second name. For example, 'Mr and Mrs Jones' works if you prefer titles, but writing both full names is now common and inclusive. You might write 'Jane and John Smith' or 'Dr Smith and Mr Smith' if titles differ.

If the couple has different surnames, use both surnames clearly, such as 'Jane Brown and John Smith'. For same-sex couples, order the names as they prefer. There is no rule about who goes first, so ask them what they like.

Put the full address on the outer envelope and leave it off the inner envelope if you use one. Do not abbreviate street names on the outer envelope. Check with the couple if you are unsure about their preferred style, especially if they use non-traditional titles or family arrangements.
