How do you accept a wedding invitation?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Reply exactly as the invitation asks, usually by the date given, so the couple can plan. Check whether you may bring a plus one before you confirm.

Look at the invitation first. Many couples now send a wedding website link or a QR code. You will usually RSVP online, by text, by email or by returning a card. Follow the method they have chosen, because it tells them how to count you. If you are unsure, a polite message is fine.

Give your answer by the deadline. This is not about pressure. It helps the couple book the right number of meals and seats. If your plans change after you say yes, tell them as soon as possible. A last-minute drop-out can leave empty seats and wasted food.

Check the invitation for who is invited. Some cards name everyone in your household, which means partners and children are included. Others say adults only or leave room for a guest. If it is unclear, ask the couple privately rather than guessing. It is better to ask once than to arrive with someone who was not expected.
