Who not to invite to your wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Do not invite people you do not want to spend the day with, including ex partners, colleagues you barely know, or anyone whose presence would cause tension. Your guest list is yours to decide.

Start by listing the people you truly want there, then remove anyone who does not belong. This might include an ex partner if seeing them would be painful, or a relative who causes arguments at family events.

Think about your venue and budget. You may need to limit work colleagues or distant acquaintances. It is acceptable to invite only close family from one side if the other side is very large. Set a clear rule, such as no plus ones unless you know the partner, and apply it fairly to everyone.

Be kind but firm if someone asks to come. You do not owe a long explanation. A simple note that you are keeping the day small works well.

If you are unsure about a tricky case, talk it through with your partner first. Then make a joint decision so you both feel comfortable with the list. Remember that the day is about celebrating with the people who matter most to you.
