How many people decline a wedding invite?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

There is no fixed number, but many UK couples find roughly a third of invited guests decline. Your own venue and budget decide what is workable for you.

Every wedding is different, so do not compare your numbers with another couple's. Some events see very few declines while others see many more. The figure you hear most often is around one in three, but treat it as a rough guide rather than a rule.

Start with your ideal list, then work backwards from what your venue can hold and what you can afford. Consider who you genuinely want there and who will add to the day. A smaller, fuller room is often better than a half-empty hall.

Plan for a buffer. If you expect some declines, you can invite a few extra people on a waiting list. Ask your venue if they can offer extra chairs or tables at short notice. This gives you flexibility if more people say yes than you hoped.

When guests do decline, thank them for letting you know. It frees up space and helps you plan food and seating. Keep a record of who said no so you do not invite them again next year.
