How many invited guests will come to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

You cannot know exactly how many will come, but most UK weddings see a majority of invited guests attend, with close family and local friends turning up more often than distant ones.

Plan your budget and venue around the number you invite, not the number you expect. Close family and local friends are usually the most reliable. Distant relatives and work colleagues may be less likely to attend, especially if travel is needed.

Send invitations early and ask for replies by a clear date. Follow up politely with anyone who has not responded as the deadline passes. This helps you give seats and meals to people who are definitely coming.

Remember that some guests may bring a plus one or a child even if they did not say so. Ask clearly on your invitation who is invited, and check your venue policy on children beforehand.

If you are worried about numbers, choose a venue that can accommodate your full list comfortably. It is better to have a few empty seats than to be cramped. Keep a short waiting list of people you could invite if several declines come in.
