How do you invite guests to a wedding abroad?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Send save-the-dates early, give clear travel and visa details, and ask guests to confirm their ability to travel before you finalise numbers. Check GOV.UK for entry rules for each country.

Send save-the-dates at least six months ahead, and ideally earlier for a long-haul destination. Guests need time to plan holidays, request time off work and budget for flights. Include the country, the town and the month, plus a link to a website with the full details.

Provide practical information in plain language. Explain how guests get from the airport to the venue, what the weather is usually like and whether they need a visa or special entry rules. Tell them the deadline for confirming travel, because international bookings often cost more later. Be ready for some guests to be unable to come, and make that clear in your wording.

Consider a welcome event or a send-off at home so those who cannot travel still feel included. You might also share a group booking link for flights or rooms, but never require guests to use a specific provider.

Keep your guest list flexible. International travel is expensive and tiring, so expect a lower attendance rate than at a local wedding. Plan the seating and meals around those who can make it.
