What is the etiquette for addressing wedding invitations to a family?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Address the outer envelope to the parents by name, and list any invited children by name underneath, or write "and Family" if you are happy for guests to bring their children without naming them.

The key rule is that whoever is named on the envelope is invited. If you write only the parents' names, guests may assume their children are not invited. If you want children to come, name them on the envelope, either on the same line as the parents or on a second line. For a more formal tone, use full titles and surnames, such as "Mr and Mrs David Jones". For a less formal wedding, first names are fine. If you are inviting a family but do not know the children's names, write "and Family" after the parents' names, but be aware this is less precise. If some children are invited but not others, name only those invited. If you are not inviting children at all, address the envelope to the parents only, and make that clear on your wedding website or by word of mouth. Always use the correct titles, especially for doctors, judges or military ranks, and check the spelling of every name carefully.
