What is the proper way to address a wedding invitation to a family?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Address the outer envelope to both parents by name, for example Mr and Mrs James Smith, and the inner envelope to the whole family, such as The Smith Family. If children are invited, include their names on the inner envelope so everyone knows who is expected.

For a family with children, the outer envelope should name the adults only, using their full names and titles. The inner envelope can then list each child by first name, or simply say The Smith Family if you want to keep it informal. If you are inviting only some children, name them individually so there is no confusion. For unmarried couples living together, use both names on one line, for example Ms Anna Jones and Mr Tom Brown. For same-sex couples, either name can go first, and you can use the titles they prefer. If the family includes a child over 18, they should receive their own invitation, even if they live at home. When you are unsure of a title or how someone prefers to be addressed, it is kind to ask a close relative or friend. The aim is to make every guest feel welcomed and clear about who is invited. You can also add a note on the inner envelope saying Adults only at the ceremony, if that is your plan, but do this politely and in advance.
