What is proper etiquette for a wedding invitation?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Proper etiquette means sending invites early, giving clear RSVP details, and being consistent with names and wording. It also means respecting your guests' needs, such as dietary requirements, and not asking for money on the invite itself.

Etiquette for wedding invitations is mostly about clarity and kindness. Send your invitations with enough notice, usually six to eight weeks before the wedding, and earlier if many guests are travelling. For a destination wedding, send them three to four months ahead. Always include an RSVP date and a way to reply, whether that is by post, email or your wedding website.

Use full names and correct titles for every guest, and address the envelope to everyone who is invited. If children are not invited, say so politely on the website or by addressing the invite to the adults only. If you are having a child-free wedding, make that clear before people book travel.

Do not mention gifts or money on the invitation. If you have a gift list, put it on your wedding website. Also avoid asking for cash on the invite; that is best handled privately or on the website. If you have guests with allergies or mobility needs, include a way for them to tell you, for example on the RSVP form. Good etiquette is simply making your guests feel welcomed and informed.
