What is wedding invitation etiquette?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Send invitations to named guests, include the date, time, venue and RSVP details, and address everyone politely. Guests should be invited with a plus-one only if you can genuinely host them.

Wedding invitation etiquette in the UK is about clarity and kindness. Start with the names of the hosts if they are contributing, then invite the guests by name. If you are inviting a couple, name both people. If you are inviting a family, name the parents and say "and family" if children are welcome.

Include the full date, the time the ceremony starts, the venue address, and the time of the reception if it is separate. Add a clear RSVP date and a way to reply, whether that is by post, email or a wedding website. If you have a dress code, mention it politely, for example "black tie" or "garden party attire".

Only offer a plus-one if you can actually host that person. It is better to invite fewer people and treat them well than to invite more and struggle. If you are having a child-free wedding, say so kindly on the invitation or on your website, and give parents plenty of notice.

If you need to uninvite someone, do it as early as possible and be honest and apologetic. Etiquette is not about being formal, it is about making guests feel welcome and informed.
