How much postage do I need for wedding invitations?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Postage for wedding invitations depends on the size, weight and shape of your card. Standard letters up to 100g cost one stamp, but thicker or square envelopes may need extra postage.

Royal Mail charges by size, weight and shape, not just by number of pages. A standard rectangular invitation that fits through a letterbox and weighs under 100g usually needs a first or second class stamp. But if your invitation is square, unusually thick, or has extra inserts like a reply card and envelope, it may be classed as a large letter, which costs more.

To be safe, take one fully assembled invitation to the Post Office and ask them to weigh it. They will tell you the exact postage. You can also check the Royal Mail website for current prices and size guides. If you are sending many invitations, ask about a bulk discount or use a franking machine service, though that is usually for businesses.

If you want to save on postage, keep your invitation to a standard rectangular size, use lightweight card, and avoid extra layers like ribbons or wax seals. Those look lovely but add weight and can push you into a higher price band.

For e-invites, there is no postage at all. Many couples now send digital invitations by email or private link, which is free and instant. If you have guests who prefer paper, you can send a printed version only to them.
