How to address wedding invitations correctly?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Write the guest's full name and address clearly on the outer envelope, using titles like Mr, Mrs, Ms, or Dr. For married couples, use both names on one line or two lines. For families, address parents by name and older children on a separate line.

Start with the outer envelope, which should carry the full postal address and the guest's name. Use formal titles unless you know the guest prefers otherwise. For a married couple with the same surname, write Mr John Smith and Mrs Jane Smith on one line, or use two lines if you prefer. For a married couple with different surnames, list each name on its own line. For unmarried partners living together, write both names on separate lines, with the person you know better first. For a family, address the parents by name and add children's names underneath, or write "and family" if you are inviting everyone. If you are inviting children, include their names so they know they are welcome.

For the inner envelope, if you use one, you can be less formal. Use first names only, or titles and surnames, depending on your relationship. Always spell names correctly and check the address against the guest's current details. Include the full postcode and write the return address on the back flap. If you are sending invitations abroad, write the country name in capital letters. For same-sex couples, use the same rules as any couple, with titles that match their preferences. If you are unsure of a guest's title or name, ask them directly or check with a family member.
