How far in advance should you set an RSVP for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Set your RSVP deadline for two to three weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to chase late replies, confirm final numbers with your venue and caterer, and sort seating without last-minute stress.

Aim for a deadline about three weeks before the wedding, and no later than two weeks. Your venue and caterer usually need final numbers a week or two ahead, so a three-week deadline leaves a comfortable buffer. If you have guests travelling from abroad or needing accommodation, send invitations earlier and ask for an earlier reply, maybe six weeks before. For a wedding with many local guests, four weeks is fine too.

Remember that some people will ignore the date, so plan a gentle chase. Send a polite reminder to anyone who has not replied a few days after the deadline. You can message them personally or use your wedding website to send a nudge. Keep a small buffer in your numbers, because a few guests may cancel or change plans at the last minute.

If you are having a legal ceremony in England or Wales, the notice period and venue rules do not affect your RSVP date, but your venue may have its own deadline. Check your contract and ask the venue coordinator what date they need final numbers. That date is your latest possible RSVP deadline, so work backwards from it.
