How far in advance should I order my wedding dress?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Order your wedding dress six to nine months before your wedding date. This allows time for ordering, manufacturing, shipping and several fittings without cutting it too close.

Buying your dress well ahead gives you breathing room for everything that can go slightly wrong. Many high street and designer dresses are made to order, which means they are not kept in stock. Once you place your order, production and delivery can take several months.

After the dress arrives, you will still need time for fittings and alterations. If you order too late, you may find yourself paying for express shipping or facing limited options in the alterations schedule. Ordering early also means you can try on more styles and take your time choosing.

If you are buying a sample dress from a shop, it may be available sooner, but you may need more alterations. If you are unsure about your size or style, consider ordering a bit earlier rather than later. Always confirm the expected delivery date with the shop in writing before you pay, and check their policy on delays.
