Short answer
For a made-to-order dress, buy it 6 to 9 months before the wedding to allow time for fittings and alterations. For an off-the-peg or sample dress, you can buy it 2 to 3 months ahead, but leave time for adjustments.
The ideal time to buy your wedding dress depends on the style and where you buy it. If you order a dress from a bridal boutique, it can take several months to arrive, especially if it is made to measure or imported. Allow at least 6 to 9 months for the dress to be made and delivered, plus another 6 to 8 weeks for alterations. That means you should start shopping about a year before the wedding if you want plenty of choice. If you are buying off the peg, from a sample sale, or second-hand, you can buy it much closer to the date, perhaps 2 to 3 months ahead. But always leave time for at least one fitting, because even a perfect dress may need hemming or taking in. Also consider the season: if you are getting married in summer, buy earlier because shops are busier. If you are on a tight timeline, look for shops that sell ready-to-wear dresses or that offer express delivery. You can also rent a dress, which is a good option for short engagements. Whatever you choose, remember that your body may change, so don't buy too early if you plan to lose weight, and don't leave alterations until the last minute. Always ask the shop about their delivery times and alteration policy before you pay.
