What to expect at your first wedding dress fitting?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

At your first fitting you can expect the dress to be tried on with pins marking where it needs to change, while the seamstress discusses the hem, the bodice and any structural work. The dress will usually be left long so it can be adjusted later.

Arrive with the undergarments and shoes you intend to wear, since these change the way the dress sits on your body. The seamstress will ask you to stand naturally and then walk, sit and raise your arms so they can see how the dress moves. They will pin the hem, the waist and the neckline, and may mark where fabric needs to be taken in or let out.

This first session is mostly about planning. The seamstress will explain what alterations are needed, how long each will take and whether any structural changes are required. They may also discuss the order of work, such as whether the bodice should be done before the skirt. Do not expect the dress to look finished at this stage, because it usually will not.

Ask questions about care, storage and how to get into the dress on the day. If you are nervous, remember that this is a normal part of the process and that every bride goes through it. Take notes or a photo of the pinned dress if the salon allows, so you can remember the changes discussed. Bring a partner or friend if their support helps, but keep the group small so the seamstress can work efficiently.
