What should I wear to my first wedding dress appointment?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Wear something comfortable and easy to change, like a simple slip dress or leggings and a vest. Avoid heavy makeup and big jewellery. Bring a strapless bra if you have one, but most salons will have samples and underwear for you to try on.

Your first appointment is about exploring shapes and styles, not making a final decision. Wear light, simple clothing that slips off easily, such as a button-up shirt and leggings, or a plain slip dress. This makes changing in and out of sample gowns much quicker and less awkward. You will be trying on dresses that are often a few sizes bigger than your usual size, so do not worry if they are loose or clipped at the back. That is completely normal.

Skip heavy makeup and strong perfume, as they can mark the delicate fabrics of the sample dresses. A little lip balm and deodorant are fine. Bring a strapless bra, or go without one, as many dresses have built-in support. You might also want to bring a pair of low heels or barefoot-style shoes to get a feel for the length, but most salons have a small podium you can stand on. Wear your hair in a simple style, like a ponytail or a claw clip, so you can see the neckline clearly.

Most importantly, come with an open mind. The dress you think you want may not suit you, and the one you never considered might be the one. Listen to the stylist, but trust your own comfort. You do not need to bring a big group; one or two trusted people are usually enough. And remember, you are not committing to anything at the first appointment, so enjoy the process.
