Short answer
Most brides need two to three fittings for a wedding dress. The first fitting happens about eight to twelve weeks before the wedding, the second about four weeks before, and a final check in the last week. Simple dresses may need only one.
Plan for two to three fittings, but be ready for a fourth if you lose or gain weight, or if the dress has complex details like a corset back or a long train. Your first fitting should be around eight to twelve weeks before the wedding. At this appointment, the seamstress will pin the dress to fit your body, and you will discuss hem length, bustle, and any changes to sleeves or straps.
The second fitting is usually three to four weeks before the wedding. By then, the main alterations are done, and you will try on the dress with your shoes, underwear, and any shapewear. The seamstress will make final adjustments. A third fitting, often in the last week, is a quick check to make sure everything is perfect and to practise walking, sitting, and dancing.
If you are buying off the peg, you may need fewer fittings. If you are having a bespoke dress made, the maker will include fittings as part of the process. Always ask the shop or seamstress how many fittings are included in the price, and whether extra fittings cost more. Bring your veil and jewellery to the final fitting so you can see the whole look.
