What is proper etiquette for wedding RSVP?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Proper etiquette is to reply as soon as you can, ideally within a week of receiving the invitation, and always by the deadline. Reply for every person named on the invitation, and let the couple know if your plans change.

When you receive a wedding invitation, respond promptly. The couple needs accurate numbers for their venue, caterer and seating plan, so a quick reply is kind and practical. If the invitation includes a named partner or children, reply for each person. Do not assume you can bring a guest if their name is not on the envelope. If you are unsure, ask the couple directly.

If you cannot attend, say so clearly and promptly. It is better to decline early than to leave the couple waiting. If you have accepted and then cannot go, tell the couple as soon as possible. Life happens, but the earlier they know, the easier it is for them to adjust.

When replying online, fill in every field correctly, especially your name and meal choice if asked. If you have dietary requirements, mention them in the notes box. Do not reply for someone else unless they have asked you to. If you are a plus-one, reply using your own name, not the invited guest's name.

If you miss the deadline, contact the couple or their wedding party directly. Do not simply not reply. A late reply is stressful, but a no-reply is worse. Always be gracious and apologise for the delay.
