Short answer
Most guests reply within two to four weeks of receiving the invitation, but a significant number wait until the deadline or need a reminder. Expect to chase around a third of your guest list after the deadline passes.
In practice, replies come in waves. The first wave arrives within the first week, usually from close family and friends who are excited. The second wave comes after a few weeks, as people check calendars and make plans. The final wave is often late, arriving just before or after your deadline. You should plan to send gentle reminders to anyone who has not replied by the deadline.
Do not take late replies personally. People forget, get busy, or assume you know they are coming. A polite nudge via your wedding website or a personal message works well. You can also ask your bridal party or parents to help chase their own friends and relatives.
To reduce late replies, make the RSVP process as easy as possible. Use an online form with a clear link, and include the deadline on the invitation and website. You can also set an automatic reminder email or text for guests who have not replied, if your website tool allows it. If you have older guests who prefer paper, offer a paper reply card as well.
Remember that some guests will change their answer after replying, especially if they are waiting for work or childcare. Keep a small buffer in your numbers and stay flexible. The key is to have your final numbers to the venue on time, so chase early and kindly.
