Why do people not RSVP to weddings?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

People often forget, assume you know they are coming, or feel unsure about their plans. Some worry about saying no, or they misplace the invitation. It is rarely meant rudely, but it does create extra work for you. A gentle reminder usually solves it.

There are many reasons why guests do not reply. Some genuinely forget, especially if the invitation arrives months before the wedding. Others assume that because they spoke to you at a family event or saw you online, you already know they are coming. Some people are waiting to see if they can get time off work, arrange childcare, or afford travel, and they put off replying until the last minute. A few feel awkward about saying no, so they stay silent rather than disappoint you. And occasionally an invitation gets lost in the post or buried under other mail.

Whatever the reason, it is normal and not a reflection on you or your wedding. The best approach is to set a clear RSVP date and then send a friendly reminder to anyone who has not replied. You can do this by text, email, or a phone call. Say something like, "Just checking in about our wedding. We would love to know if you can make it, so we can confirm numbers with the venue." Keep it light and kind. If someone still does not reply after a reminder, you can assume they are not coming, but it is worth calling them directly if they are close family or a dear friend. Try not to take it personally, and remember that most people are simply busy or forgetful.
