Short answer
A good reply message is short and clear. For accepting: 'Thank you for the invitation. We would love to join you on 14 June. We look forward to celebrating with you.' For declining: 'Thank you for thinking of us. Sadly we cannot make it, but we wish you a wonderful day.'
Your RSVP reply should match the tone of the invitation. If the couple sent a formal card, write a formal reply. If they used a casual e-invite, a short text or website response is fine. The key is to be prompt, polite and specific.
When accepting, include the names of everyone attending, especially if you have a plus one. You can say: 'We are delighted to accept. It will be John and me, and our daughter Lily.' If you have dietary needs, mention them briefly: 'One vegetarian meal, please.' Do not add extra guests unless the invitation clearly allows it.
When declining, keep it simple and kind. You do not need to give a reason. A good message is: 'Thank you so much for the invitation. Unfortunately we are unable to attend, but we send you all our love and best wishes for the day.' If you are close to the couple, you might add a personal note or offer to meet up another time.
If you are replying on behalf of a family, make sure everyone knows the plan. For example, if your partner cannot come but your child can, say so clearly. The couple needs accurate numbers for seating and catering.
Always reply by the date given, even if you have already told the couple verbally. This helps them finalise everything without chasing you.
