What should I write in an RSVP text message?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Write your name, the number of guests attending, and the name of the event. Add a friendly line like "Can't wait!" or "Sorry we can't make it." Keep it clear and polite.

A text RSVP should be as clear as a reply card. Start with your full name so the couple knows who is replying. Then state exactly how many people in your party will attend. If the invitation names a plus one, say whether they are coming too.

You do not need to write a long message. A simple reply works well: "Hi, this is Alex Smith. Two of us will attend the wedding and the evening reception. Thank you for inviting us." If you cannot go, say so kindly: "Sorry, we can't make it, but we wish you a wonderful day."

If the couple asked for dietary needs or song requests, include those in the same text. For example: "One vegetarian, one gluten-free. Our song is ..." Keep the tone warm and personal. Avoid emojis unless the couple uses them in their own messages.

If you are replying on behalf of a family, name everyone who is coming. Do not assume the couple remembers your children's names. If you are unsure about the date or venue, check the invitation before replying. Text replies are fine, but always follow the couple's instructions if they asked for a specific method.
