How do you write a wedding invitation message?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Start with the hosts, then the couple's names, the request, the date, time and venue, and finish with reception details and RSVP. Keep it clear, warm and personal.

Begin by deciding who is hosting. If parents host, write their names first. If you host yourselves, write 'Together with their families' or simply your names. Then state the request: 'request the pleasure of your company' for formal, or 'invite you to celebrate' for casual. Write both full names, for example 'Emma Smith and James Brown'. Next, give the date, time and venue. Write the date in full, like 'Saturday, the fourteenth of June 2025', or use numbers if that feels too formal. Include the time and the venue name and address. After that, add reception details: 'Reception to follow at the same venue' or a separate location. Then add RSVP information: a name, phone number, email or a website address. Set an RSVP date, usually three to four weeks before the wedding, so you can finalise numbers. Add any extra lines for dress code, accommodation or directions, but keep the main invitation simple. If you have a wedding website, put the address on a separate card or at the bottom. Read the message aloud to check it flows. Ask a friend to check for missing details like the year or postcode. The message should feel like a warm invitation, not a formal notice.
