How to write date and time on an invitation card?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Write the date in full, for example "Saturday, the fifteenth of June, two thousand and twenty-five", and the time in words or numbers, like "at half past two in the afternoon".

For a formal invitation, write the date in words rather than numbers. The traditional format is: "Saturday, the fifteenth of June, two thousand and twenty-five". This avoids confusion between day and month and looks elegant. If you prefer a simpler style, you can write "Saturday 15 June 2025" but this is less formal.

Put the date on one line and the time on the next, or combine them: "at half past two in the afternoon on Saturday, the fifteenth of June". The most common order is date first, then time, but either is fine as long as it is clear.

Do not use abbreviations like "Sat" or "Jun", and avoid writing "15/06/25" as it can be misread. If your ceremony is in the morning or evening, say "in the morning" or "in the evening" rather than using AM or PM.

If you have a dress code or a reception time, add those separately, for example "Reception to follow" or "Black tie from 6.30 in the evening". Keep the date and time together so guests notice them first.
