How do I write wedding invitations with both sets of parents' names?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

List both sets of parents on separate lines, usually the bride's parents first, then the groom's parents, or combine them with "together with". Use full names and titles as they prefer.

The traditional format lists the bride's parents first, then the groom's parents. For example:

Mr and Mrs James Smith request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Emily Rose and Oliver James son of Mr and Mrs David Brown

If both sets of parents are hosting together, you can write:

Together with their families Mr and Mrs James Smith and Mr and Mrs David Brown request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of Emily Rose and Oliver James

For same-sex couples, list both sets of parents in the order that feels right to you, or simply say "Together with their families". If parents are divorced or remarried, include their current partners only if they are hosting or you want them named. Use the names they prefer, and check titles like Dr or Professor.

If you are hosting yourselves, you can write "Together with their families" without naming parents, which is simple and inclusive. Always ask parents how they would like to be named, as some prefer not to be listed.
