How to invite for a wedding short message?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Keep it simple: names of the couple, date, time, venue, and a request to RSVP. For example, “Together with their families, Alex and Sam invite you to their wedding on Saturday 14 June at 2pm, followed by dinner and dancing. Please reply by 1 May.”

A short wedding invitation should give your guests the essentials without any fuss. Start with the names of the couple, then the date, time and venue. Add a line about the reception if it is at the same place, or say “reception to follow” if not. End with an RSVP date and a way to reply, whether that is by post, email or your wedding website.

Keep the tone warm and direct. You do not need to list every event or dress code. If you are having a separate evening party, you can add a simple line like “Evening reception from 7pm” so guests know what to expect. For a more formal feel, use phrases like “request the pleasure of your company”. For a relaxed wedding, “we would love you to join us” works just as well.

Remember to include your names clearly, especially if you are not the ones sending the invitations. If your parents are hosting, you might say “together with their families” or use their names. Keep the wording short so guests can read it at a glance. One or two lines for the main invitation is plenty, and you can put extra details like directions or accommodation on a separate card or your website.
