What should a wedding photographer checklist include?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Your checklist should cover research, budget, style, availability, contract, shot list, timing, backup plans, and delivery. Start early, meet or video call your photographer, and confirm every detail in writing before you pay a deposit.

Begin by setting a realistic budget and deciding what matters most, such as formal portraits, candid shots, or coverage from morning to evening. Then research local photographers, look at full wedding galleries rather than highlights, and shortlist three or four whose style you love. Check their availability for your date, and arrange a call or meeting to see if you get on well.

Before booking, ask for a detailed quote that lists hours, number of edited images, delivery format, and any travel or overtime costs. Read the contract carefully, including cancellation and copyright terms. Plan your shot list together, covering family groups, key moments, and specific people you want photographed. Share a timeline with your photographer so they know when the ceremony, speeches, and first dance happen.

On the day, have a contact person, usually a bridal party member, who can gather people for photos. Agree on a backup plan in case of bad weather or illness. After the wedding, confirm how and when you will receive your images, and whether you can print them yourself. Keep the photographer's contact details handy, and ask about a second shooter if your guest list is large or your venue is spread out.
