How do you choose a wedding photographer?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Choose a wedding photographer whose style you love, whose personality you like, and who has experience at your type of venue. Meet them before booking and look at full galleries, not just highlights.

Start by deciding what style of photos you want. Do you prefer natural, documentary shots or more posed, classic portraits? Look at photographers' portfolios online and save the ones that make you feel something. Then narrow it down to three or four and arrange a video call or a coffee. You will spend a lot of time with this person, so you need to feel comfortable. Ask to see at least two complete weddings from start to finish, not just the best images. That shows you how they handle low light, rain, and tricky group shots. Check their experience with your venue, especially if it is a church, a barn, or a castle with restrictions. Ask about their backup equipment and what happens if they are ill on the day. Confirm how many hours they will be with you, and whether that covers getting ready, the ceremony, and the first dance. Discuss the delivery timeline for edited photos and how you receive them, whether online gallery or USB. Ask about copyright and whether you can print your own images. Trust your instincts. If they are pushy or vague, move on. A good photographer will be flexible, calm and organised. Remember, the cheapest option is not always the best value, and the most expensive is not always right for you.
