Short answer
Choose people who are reliable, supportive and close to you, not just those you feel obliged to ask. Think about who will help you stay calm, who can handle small tasks, and who will celebrate genuinely. Quality matters more than numbers.
Start by listing people you truly want beside you, not everyone you have ever known. Consider siblings, close friends, cousins or even a parent. Ask yourself three questions: Will they be happy for you? Will they show up when needed? Will they add joy or stress? It is fine to have a small party of two or three, or a large one of ten. There is no rule. If you are having a mixed-gender party, that is completely normal. Talk to each person individually, explain what you would love them to do, and give them time to say yes or no without pressure. Be clear about expectations, such as attending fittings, helping with small tasks, or just being present on the day. If someone cannot afford a specific outfit or event, offer flexibility, such as choosing their own dress or suit in a colour you like. Avoid asking someone out of guilt, because that can create tension later. If you have a large friendship group, you could include them all as ushers or readers instead. Remember, your wedding party is there to support you, not to perform. Choose people who make you feel safe and happy.
