What do I do as the best man?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For grooms

Short answer

As best man, you support the groom from proposal to wedding day: plan the stag do, help with logistics, hold the rings, give a speech, sign as witness and keep things calm on the day.

Start by asking the groom what he wants from you. Some grooms want lots of help; others just want you to turn up. Agree early on who plans the stag do, what the budget is and who pays, so there are no surprises.

In the months before, help with practical tasks: suit fittings, transport, accommodation for guests, or running errands. You might also help the groom write his speech or keep his schedule organised. On the morning of the wedding, be with him early, make sure he eats, has his speech notes and gets tothe venue in good time.

At the ceremony, hold the rings safely until the registrar or officiant asks for them. You will also be a witness, so sign the marriage document when asked. At the reception, give your speech after the father of the bride or couple, keep it warm and personal, and finish with a toast to the couple.

Through the evening, help the ushers if needed, keep an eye on timings, and make sure the couple gets a moment to eat and enjoy themselves. If something goes wrong, stay calm and sort it quietly. Your main job is to make the groom feel supported, not to run everything yourself.
