Do you really need a best man?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

No, you do not need a best man. You can choose anyone you like to support you, or have no one at all. The role is traditional, not legal, so it is entirely your choice.

The best man is a tradition, not a requirement. Legally, you only need two witnesses at the ceremony, and they do not have to be the best man or ushers. Many couples now choose a best woman, a maid of honour, a sibling, a parent, or a close friend regardless of gender. Some couples have two best people or none at all.

If you skip the best man, you simply divide the usual tasks among other trusted friends or family. For example, someone can hold the rings, another can give a speech, and another can organise the stag do. You might also decide to have no speeches from the wedding party at all, which is perfectly acceptable.

The key is to choose people who will support you in the way you need. Think about who is organised, calm, and reliable, rather than who fits a traditional label. If no one feels right, that is fine. Your wedding can still run smoothly without a best man, as long as you plan ahead and delegate tasks clearly.
