How to end a best man speech with a toast?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For grooms

Short answer

Raise your glass, look at the couple, and say something like: 'Please join me in raising your glasses to the happy couple. To [names], may your life together be full of love and laughter.'

End your speech by signalling the toast clearly. Stand, hold your glass at chest height, and pause so everyone follows your lead. Keep the final line short and sincere. A classic structure is: thank the couple, offer one warm wish, then name them clearly. For example: 'To [name] and [name], may every day together be better than the last. Please raise your glasses with me.'

Make sure your glass is full before you start the toast. Look at the couple, not your notes, as you say their names. If you want to add humour, do it before the toast, not during it. The toast itself should feel genuine and unhurried. After everyone drinks, you can sit down or hand over to the next speaker. Practise the final line a few times so it flows naturally. A confident, simple toast is far more memorable than a long, complicated one.
