How do you give a best man speech?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Give a best man speech by keeping it short, warm and personal. Thank the couple and the guests, share one or two kind or funny stories, toast the couple, and sit down. Practise out loud beforehand so you feel confident on the day.

Start by introducing yourself and thanking the couple for letting you speak. Then thank the guests for coming and the hosts for the day. Keep the focus on the couple, not on yourself. Share one or two short stories that show their relationship, and keep any humour gentle. Avoid private jokes, embarrassing details or anything that could upset a guest. Mention the partners by name and speak warmly about both of them. If you are the best man for a groom, say something kind about the groom and how happy he is with their partner. End by proposing a toast to the couple. Raise your glass, look at them, and say their names clearly. Keep the whole speech under five minutes. Practise it aloud several times, ideally in front of a friend. On the day, speak slowly, breathe, and have a printed copy in case you forget. If you feel nervous, that is normal. A short, sincere speech will always be remembered more fondly than a long one.
