Does the best man have to make a speech?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For grooms

Short answer

No, the best man does not have to make a speech, but it is traditional. If he is nervous or does not want to speak, the couple can ask someone else, or skip the speech altogether. Many couples now choose a friend or sibling to speak instead, or have no speeches at all.

There is no legal or formal requirement for the best man to speak. The tradition comes from the idea that the best man toasts the couple and thanks everyone on behalf of the bridal party. But you are free to shape your day however you like. If the best man is shy, hates public speaking, or simply does not want to, that is fine.

You could ask the maid of honour, a parent, or a close friend to give a toast instead. Some couples have a joint speech from two people, or a short thank you from both partners. Others skip speeches entirely and just enjoy the meal. If you do have speeches, keep them warm and brief. A good speech thanks the guests, shares a short story, and raises a glass to the couple.

If the best man does speak, he does not need to be funny or polished. A few sincere sentences are often more memorable than a long comedy routine. Make sure he knows the order of speeches and the timing. And if he is worried, offer him a quiet space to practise and a glass of water on the day.
