Short answer
Choose the right venue by first deciding your guest list, budget and the style of wedding you want. Shortlist three to five venues, visit them, ask detailed questions and compare them fairly. Trust your instincts after seeing them in person.
Start with the basics. Know your guest count, your overall budget and the kind of atmosphere you want, whether that is a barn, a hotel, a stately home or a beach. This will narrow your search quickly. Use wedding websites and recommendations from friends, but do not book without visiting. Photos can be flattering, and you need to feel the space.
When you visit, take a list of questions. Ask about availability on your preferred date, the hire fee and what it includes, catering options, alcohol policies, decor restrictions, noise curfews and whether you can have candles or fireworks. Check the toilets, the bridal suite and the car park. Notice the little things: is the carpet worn, are the windows clean, does it smell fresh?
Think about the flow of the day. Can guests move easily from the ceremony to the drinks reception to the dining room? Is there a separate space for the band or DJ? Where would the cake go? Where would guests hang coats? These details matter on the day.
After the visits, compare your notes. Consider the total cost, not just the hire fee. Factor in travel, accommodation and any extras. Talk it through with your partner and your families if they are contributing. Then make the decision together. If two venues are close, choose the one where the staff made you feel most welcome.
