Short answer
Start by agreeing your guest list, budget and preferred region, then shortlist venues that match. Visit each one in person, ask about availability and legal ceremony options, and trust your gut. Book once you feel confident it fits your day.
Begin with the practical basics: how many guests you want, roughly what you can spend, and where you would like to marry. This narrows your search quickly. Then use online directories and word of mouth to build a shortlist of five or six venues that look promising.
Check whether each venue can host a legal ceremony on site. In England and Wales, that means a register office, an approved venue, or a registered religious building. In Scotland, almost anywhere can work with the registrar or celebrant. In Northern Ireland, check with the local registrar. If you want a humanist ceremony, remember it is only legally binding in Scotland and Northern Ireland, so in England and Wales you may need a separate civil ceremony.
Visit each venue at the time of day you would use it, not just on a sunny afternoon. Ask about capacity, wet weather plans, noise restrictions, and whether they have outdoor ceremony spaces, which are allowed at approved venues in England and Wales since 2022. Take photos, note how the staff respond to your questions, and imagine your guests moving through the space.
Finally, compare what is included in each package, such as tables, chairs, linens, and staff. Choose the venue that feels right for you as a couple, not the one that looks best in photos. You should feel relaxed there, because that is where you will start your married life.
