How to pick a venue for your wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Pick a venue by matching your guest list, budget and style to the space, then check the legal rules for your ceremony. Visit in person and ask clear questions about what is included.

Start by writing down your guest list and your total budget before you look at any pictures. A room that looks perfect online may not fit your numbers, and hidden costs can quickly change your plans. Think about what matters most to you, such as a garden for photos, parking for older guests, or a space that works for everyone.

Visit each shortlisted venue on a weekday and at the time of day you plan to hold your event. This shows you the real lighting, the noise levels and how the staff move around. Ask about the ceremony rules, because civil ceremonies cannot include religious content, and a religious ceremony is only legally binding in a registered building with an authorised person. In Scotland and Northern Ireland the rules differ, so check with the registrar or your place of worship.

  • Ask what is included in the price, such as tables, chairs and a rain plan.
  • Check the alcohol licence and whether you can bring your own cake.
  • Find out how early you can access the space for decorating.

Trust your instinct about the host. You will spend your whole day with them, and a warm, organised team makes a big difference.
