What should I look for in a wedding venue?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Look for a venue that fits your guest list, budget and style, with a space that works for both the ceremony and the reception. Check the practical details: parking, accessibility, toilets, noise restrictions and what is included in the hire.

Start with your guest list. A venue that is too big feels empty, and one that is too small feels cramped. Think about how you want the day to flow. Do you want the ceremony and reception in the same place, or are you happy to travel between two venues? Check whether the ceremony space is licensed for civil weddings, or if you will need a separate legal ceremony elsewhere. For religious weddings, check whether the building is registered and what the rules are for banns or a licence.

Look at the practical side. Is there enough parking for guests, or good public transport links? Are the toilets clean and plentiful? Is there step-free access for older guests or wheelchair users? Ask about noise restrictions, especially if you want music late into the evening. Find out exactly what is included in the hire fee: tables, chairs, linen, crockery, glassware and staff. Some venues charge extra for everything, so ask for a full list.

Visit at the same time of day you would hold your wedding, to see the light and atmosphere. Ask about wet weather plans if you want an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception. Trust your gut. If the venue feels right and the team are helpful, that is a good sign.
