Short answer
Most couples take between two and six months to choose a venue, but it can be quicker or slower depending on your budget, season, and how many venues you visit. Give yourself at least a few weekends for research and visits, and book early for popular dates.
Choosing a venue is often the first big decision in wedding planning, and it can take longer than you expect. You need time to research online, shortlist, visit, and then compare. For many couples, this process spans two to six months, especially if you are looking at venues that are far apart or have limited weekend availability.
Start by setting a clear budget and guest list, because these will rule out many venues immediately. Then spend a couple of weeks browsing online and reading reviews. Book visits for at least three or four venues, and try to see them on the same day or over two weekends so you can compare fairly. Each visit might take an hour or two, plus travel time.
After visits, you may need a week or two to discuss and check availability for your preferred date. Popular venues, especially for summer Saturdays, can book up a year or more in advance. If you have a fixed date, you may need to move faster. If you are flexible, you can take your time and even negotiate on less popular dates.
Remember that giving notice for your marriage takes at least 28 days in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 29 days in Scotland, but you can book the venue before giving notice. Just make sure your ceremony date is within 12 months of giving notice in England and Wales. So, allow plenty of time, but do not rush the decision.
