How long do wedding photos take on the day?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Group photos usually take 30 to 60 minutes. Couple portraits take another 20 to 40 minutes. The ceremony and reception are photographed as they happen, so the total time depends on your schedule and the hours you book.

The biggest chunk of dedicated photo time is for group shots. Plan for about 10 minutes per formal group, and keep the list to around 8 to 10 groups. That gives you 60 to 90 minutes in total, but a good photographer can move things along quickly. Ask your photographer to announce each group clearly so guests know when they are needed.

Couple portraits are usually calmer. You might walk away from the venue for 20 to 40 minutes, often during the drinks reception. This is your chance to relax together and get natural shots. If you want sunset photos, tell your photographer and plan for that time of day.

The ceremony and speeches are not staged, so they take as long as they take. Your photographer will work quietly in the background. The reception and first dance are also covered as they happen. In total, expect the photographer to be actively shooting for most of the hours you book, with short breaks. They will often review and back up photos during dinner.
