What is a typical timeline for wedding photography?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

A typical timeline starts with getting-ready shots two to three hours before the ceremony, then ceremony, portraits, group photos, and couple shots, finishing with evening reception candids. Your photographer will confirm timings with you.

Most photographers arrive while you are getting ready, capturing details like your dress, rings, and flowers, plus relaxed shots with your bridal party. They then cover the ceremony, often from a discreet position, and take formal group photos straight after, while everyone is together.

Next comes the couple portrait session, usually lasting 30 to 45 minutes, often during the drinks reception. After the meal and speeches, the photographer may take a short break. They return for the first dance and evening candids, and often leave around 9 or 10pm.

A good rule is to give yourself at least 15 minutes between the ceremony and the start of group photos, and another 15 minutes before the couple session. Build in buffer time for late guests or a long walk. Your photographer will suggest a detailed schedule, but you decide what matters most, whether that is more family shots or more time alone together.
