How far in advance should you book a wedding photographer?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Book your photographer 9 to 12 months before your wedding. Popular dates in summer and autumn can go even earlier. If you are planning on a shorter timeline, start asking around 6 months ahead and be flexible with your date.

Wedding photographers often take bookings a year or more in advance, especially for Saturdays in peak season. If you have a specific date in mind, start your search as soon as you have confirmed the venue. Many couples book their photographer right after the venue and before other suppliers.

If you are planning less than a year ahead, do not panic. There are skilled photographers who have last minute availability, especially on weekdays or in quieter months. Be open to a Friday or Sunday wedding, and you will have more choice. Ask for recommendations from friends, your venue, or other couples who married recently.

When you enquire, ask to see full galleries from recent weddings, not just highlights. Check that their style matches what you want, whether that is candid, formal, or a mix. Once you have found someone you trust, book them with a deposit to secure the date. Keep in touch as the day approaches, and share your timeline and shot list a few weeks before the wedding.
