What is a wedding day timeline for the photographer?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Your photographer's timeline runs from getting ready through to the first dance, with key moments like the ceremony, group shots and speeches scheduled in advance. Agree the start time and the finish time before the day.

Book your photographer for a set number of hours and agree the start time, usually when hair and makeup are nearly done. The photographer will capture getting ready, the dress or outfit, and details like rings and invitations. Then they cover the ceremony, the confetti or exit, and the drinks reception. Schedule group photos straight after the ceremony, while everyone is together and before they wander off. Give the photographer a list of must-have group shots, and keep the list short, around six to eight groups. After the meal, they will cover the speeches and the first dance. If you want evening shots, agree a later finish time. In England and Wales, the legal signing of the marriage schedule happens on the day, so make sure the photographer knows when that is and can be nearby. For a humanist ceremony, remember it is not legally binding on its own in England and Wales, so if you are adding a civil ceremony, tell the photographer both timings. Always confirm the venue's rules about photography, especially in a place of worship.
