How do you choose a wedding date?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Start with your priorities: season, venue availability, guest travel and personal meaning. Check your venue's free dates first, then narrow by what matters most to you. Give yourselves enough time to plan, usually at least six to twelve months.

Choosing a date is about balancing practical needs with what feels right. Begin by listing your must-haves. Do you want an outdoor ceremony? Then summer or early autumn is safer. Do many guests travel from far away? A weekend or a school holiday might help. Is a particular month meaningful, like when you met? That can be a lovely anchor.

Next, contact your venue and shortlist their available dates. Popular venues book up a year or more ahead, so be flexible. If you have a dream venue, their calendar may decide for you. Also think about your own work and family commitments, and any major events like exams or religious festivals that might affect guests.

Once you have two or three dates, check with your key people, like parents and bridal party, before confirming. Remember the legal side: in England and Wales you must give notice at least 28 days before, and the wedding must happen within 12 months of giving notice. In Scotland it is 29 days, and in Northern Ireland 28. For religious ceremonies, check with your place of worship about banns or licences. If you are unsure, ask your register office or check GOV.UK.
