What dates should I avoid for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Avoid dates that clash with major holidays, big sporting events, or your own family commitments. In the UK, Christmas, New Year and Easter weekends are often tricky for guests. Also avoid giving notice too late, as you need at least 28 days.

There is no official list of forbidden dates, but some are less practical. In England and Wales, you must give notice at least 28 full days before the ceremony, so avoid any date that does not allow that. In Scotland it is 29 days, and in Northern Ireland 28 days. Beyond that, think about your guests. Bank holiday weekends can be great for travel but also expensive and busy. Christmas and New Year are often hard for people with family commitments. School holidays can mean higher travel costs and some guests may be away. Also consider major events like the World Cup or the Olympics, which might distract guests or make travel difficult. If you are having a religious ceremony, your place of worship may have rules about certain days, such as Lent or Advent. Check with them directly. Finally, avoid dates that clash with your own close family's weddings, births or big celebrations. A little checking now saves stress later.
